Beregond went directly to [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com]'s apartment and rapped sharply on the door. There was no answer.

He reviewed all options regarding other locations Russell might have gone to, and decided that the park with a 32% probablity factor, or the diner at 58% were the two most likely possibilites.

Within seconds he was standing in front of the diner, taking the time to adjust his sunglasses before striding in to search for the man.

-Russell stared out of the window, watching beregond adjusting his sunglasses, then walking into the diner. Russell's half-eaten pastry fell to the table, and he ran over to his friend-

Beregond! He did it! I didn't think Smith could do it, but he did it!

-Russell flung his arms around his friend, hugging him tightly-

*quickly accessing past memories, Russell is a tactile human, much given over to touching of other humans. Beregond adjusts for these parameters, carefully and precisely sets one arm around the man's shoulders*

Smith's skills are quite good. I find no errors in this AI program he has installed my memories into. I'm satisfied with the transfer.

-Russell's initial euphoria at seeing his friend alive and well changes to unease, as Beregond stiffly responds to his embrace. He pulls back to look at him-

Beregond? What do you mean "this AI program"? He installed your memories ...

-Russell steps back-

Beregond ... are you a ... clone??

*Beregond leads Russell back to his seat, noting the human seems unstable on his feet, then seats himself across from him*

I am not a clone. I can see how you would think that, though. I am an original program based upon Beregond's beta version, his human form. Smith transferred all the beta's memories into me for archival reference purposes, but I am an original AI program. I am the perfected version of Beregond.

Isn't this wonderful news? *Beregond smiles at Russell*

-Russell stares at AI Beregond-

Perfected? I didn't think there was anything wrong with the original!

-Russell asks Martha for two strong coffees, then realisation dawns-

So you aren't human? You're like Smith?

-he begins to think this was not the day to give up alcohol!-

The original perpetuated a path of desire that resulted in his death. I would say that is quite a flaw.

That will not happen again. So, you see? You have no reason to worry about me any longer.

*voice lowering* I am not like Smith, however. I am better.

-Russell looks upset-

The "original" was my friend. And I do worry about him ... you. Are you capable of having friends?

-the last statement causes Russell to sit back, putting as much distance as possible between him and AI Beregond-

Better? How are you better?

I can ally myself with who ever I choose to, yes. I still consider you a friend, Russell.

I am better because I understand humans more than Smith does. I have archival data stored from the Beta Beregond that helps me understand why you act as you do.

Would Smith have returned your embrace earlier? I think not. He would see no value in it. I however, know that contact such as this eases the anxiety levels in humans drastically.

I may be able to accomodate other types of contact too if it helps alleviate your anxieties further.

-Russell is still staring at AI Beregond-

You understand humans more than Smith does? Then maybe you'll understand why this is FREAKING ME OUT!!!!

And are you HITTING ON ME????

-Russell stands up-

Come on, I can't continue this here, lets walk.

*scowls, I was sure my offer was well within your comfort parameters, stands and follows you outside*

I have no need to 'hit on you'. I have generously offered to try to ease your anxieties.

*quickly accesses memories to ascertain why Russell is even more agitated now*

Ah. Perhaps if we were to ingest cannabis together, you would feel our friendship bond returning. Would this assist you? I could return to my workspace and synthesize a version for my own use.

Ease my anxieties?? I don't think that's gonna help!!

-Russell continues to walk towards the park, not stopping until he gets to his tree, and they can talk, or shout, privately-

And you wanna get high? So we can still be ... friends?

-Russell stares into AIB's eyes-

Beregond ... how much of you is left in there?

Humans require bonding activities as a part of their friendships. I would like to continue our alliance, and so yes. I would be willing to do this with you. I will need time to formulate a substance compatible with my new form though.

Perhaps we could meet here tomorrow? I know this area beneath this tree is a preferred place of yours. Beregond also enjoyed it, the memories are fully retained.

*a pause, considering your question* All that Beregond once felt and knew is still within me. Every memory is intact. Does this help you?

From: [identity profile] almost-russell.livejournal.com
-Russell watches AIB, struck by how immoblie it's face is compared to Beregond's-

Our alliance? Oh, our friendship. Yeah, we could bond ...

-Russell smiles awkwardly. He realises that this could be a good way to find out if "his" Beregond is in there, somewhere-

... here would be fine. Tomorrow, same time, I'll be here. And yeah, it helps to know you have his memories, but what about his emotions? What happened to his feelings?

*sighing, finding it hard to remain patient as I explain this further, was I so slow to comprehend when I was human too?*

His feelings and emotions ceased at the point of transfer. New memories are constantly being added to that archive, but do not contain emotions any longer.

I will see you here tomorrow, then. I need to do some research and experimentation in my workspace now to create a form of cannabis I can ingest. I wish you a good afternoon, until then.

*Something in Russell's expression causes Beregond to pause a second, a momentary fluxuation gives him some concern, but perhaps it is simply because this AI construct is still new. Beregond would run some diagnostics later on to be sure he was fully optimized*
